Al Batinah South Governorate

About the Governorate

Al Batinah South Governorate consists of six wilayats: Rustaq, Al Awabi, Nakhal, Wadi Al Ma’awil, Barka, and Al Musannah, with Rustaq as its administrative center. According to the National Center for Statistics and Information, the population of the governorate is 567,460. Stretching between the Sea of Oman to the east and the foothills of the Western Hajar Mountains to the west, Al Batinah South enjoys a strategic location, significant economic potential, and a large population, all of which have contributed to its influential role throughout Oman’s history.

Alongside its many achievements in services, roads, communications, and urban planning. keeping pace with the Sultanate’s economic and social development, the governorate has also devoted attention to beautifying and planning its cities and developing tourist sites. Notable attractions include natural springs such as Al Kasfah in Rustaq and Al Thawarah in Nakhal, two of the most famous hot mineral springs in Oman, in addition to public parks and tourist resorts.

The Wilayat of Nakhal

In addition to Nakhal Fort, there is Janah Fort, which is located in the Al Alaya area, close to Al Janah Mosque. There are also a number of other castles in the villages of Al Abyad, Al Too, Halyan, and Wadi Mestal. As for the forts, there is Al Musawar Fort in Al Ghurabi area of the Wilayat of Nakhal, and Al Qurain Fort in Al Sa’ba Al Kubra region. The wilayat has a number of towers, the most famous of which are Akum and Al Tabtoub. There are four prominent archaeological mosques: Al Gharad, Al Makbar, Al Ala, and Al Sarir. There are many tourist areas in Wadi Mestal, the most famous of which are: Al Qura, Hadash, Al Hajar, Al Khadra, Al Uqaybah, and Al Khadad. All these sites thrive on agricultural products, including pomegranate, peach, grape, apricot, nuts, and quince. Wadi Al Abyadh is also a beautiful tourist site due to its abundance of water and the natural parks lining both sides of the valley.

The Wilayat of Barka

It is one of the wilayats of the Governorate of Al Batinah South. It is bordered to the north by the Wilayat of Al Mussanah, to the south by the Wilayat of Al Seeb in the Governorate of Muscat, to the east by the Sea of Oman, and to the west by the wilayats of Nakhal and Wadi Al Ma’awil. It is located about 84 km away from the capital, Muscat. The Sawadi Islands are considered the symbol of the Wilayat of Barka. The wilayat has many historical monuments, towers, forts, and walls, the most famous of which is the fortress known as Bait Al Fulaij. It was built by Al Sayyid Sultan bin Ahmed and served as the seat of rule, located on the coast adjacent to the market. In the Al Sawadi area, there is a tourist peninsula known for the beauty of its beaches and scenic views. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has provided the area with a number of umbrellas, rest houses, and planted trees, which add even more charm to this wonderful tourist site in the Wilayat of Barka. There are also two tourist islands belonging to the wilayat: Al Damaniyat and Al Joun, which are known for their abundance of seabirds and turtles. In addition, Al Naseem Park for children, along with various playgrounds, enhances the beauty and appeal of the region.

The Wilayat of Al Rustaq

The Wilayat of Al Rustaq is considered the center of the governorate and is rich in historical landmarks, the most prominent of which is Al Huqain Fort, built in 1722 and known for its distinctive clay architecture. The wilayat also houses several smaller forts, including Al Ghaith, Al Wasil, Al Wusta, Al Lamki, Al Sharq, Al Sabara, and Al Kasfah. In addition to these forts, there are 22 towers scattered throughout the region, such as Al Sayeghi, Daris, Al Hajer, Al Aali, Huwail Al Majaz, Arr, Al Saidi, Al Kahf, Sanaa, Al Muheeb, Al Kabil, and Al Kasfah. Among its most significant religious sites is the Bayada Mosque, located on the ground floor of Al Rustaq Fort, which has long been a center of learning that produced many prominent Islamic scholars from Oman. Beyond its historical significance, Al Rustaq is known for its natural beauty and tourism appeal. The wilayat is home to several notable springs such as Ayn al Hout in Wadi Bani Ouf, Ayn al Khadra in Wadi Al Sahtan surrounded by lush greenery, and Ayn al Zarqa in the Niyabat of Al Huqain. It also boasts a number of waterfalls found in Al Huqain and Wadi Al Sahtan. Picturesque wadis –valleys- like Wadi Bani Ghafir, Wadi Al Sahtan, and Wadi Bani Ouf add to the area's scenic charm. Al Rustaq features around 200 falajs, the most notable of which are Al Sayeghi, Al Hamam, Al Ta’ni, Al Kamil, Al Tayyar, and Abu Tha’lab. Natural caves such as Al Sankaha, known for their flowing waters, and key infrastructure like the Wadi Al Far’i Dam, further enhance its appeal as a destination of both cultural and ecological richness.

The Wilayat of Al Awabi

The wilayat has a number of monuments, including forts, towers, and historical old houses. Notable examples include the forts of Al Awabi, Al Rutmi, and Al Saluwt; the towers of Al Sad and Al Najour; and the traditional houses of Al Saroj, Al Misfah, and Al Wilaijah. Among its tourist attractions are Al Alya area, known for its stunning landscapes of tall trees and high mountains; Al Aja area, where massive rocks form winding paths and caves decorated with ancient inscriptions; and Al Subikhah area, distinguished by its high mountains and lush greenery.

The Wilayat of Al Mussanah

It is a wilayat in Al Batinah South Governorate, located in the Al Batinah region in the northern part of the Sultanate of Oman, and is renowned for its contributions to both industry and agriculture. Within its territory lie several important villages, including Al Badi’a, Al Mussanah (Hillat Al Souk), Al Mussanah (Hillat Al Hosn), Al Shuaiba, Shars Al Hadadba, Shars Al Braik, Al Musain'a, Al Mughasser, Abu Abali Al Sahel, Burj Al Khamis, Al Owaid, Wadi Al Ais, Al Qart, Wudam Al Ghaff, Wudam Al Sahel, Al Malada, and Al Qarihat. It is bordered to the west by the Wilayat of Suwaiq, to the east by the Wilayat of Barka, and to the south by the Wilayat of Rustaq. Al Mussanah is also a coastal town, blessed with a long and picturesque beach along which ancient Omani villages are scattered across the sands. The residents of these coastal villages are primarily engaged in fishing. The wilayat contains a number of forts, castles, and fences, totaling fifteen, among the most notable of which are Al Wilayah Fort and Al Malada Fort.

The Wilayat of Wadi Al-Ma'awal

The wilayat includes a number of castles, forts, and towers, the most important of which is Al Safala Castle, located in the village of Avi, which the wilayat has adopted as its emblem. Another notable castle is found in the town of Muslimat. The wilayat also features several forts, including Beit Mat’m’, Al Alaya, Al Khandaq, and Habra. In addition, it has seven towers, among them Al Hajrah, Al Owainah, Shams, Zaher, Al Ayoun, and Burj Al Lajal. As for the falajs, there are 22 distributed throughout the wilayat, the most significant being Al Hadith, Al Washhi, Abu Halfa, and Al Zourdi, in addition to Ayn al Shelly in the village of Avi.
