Al Buraymi Governorate

About the Governorate

The strategic location of Al Buraimi Governorate provides a relative advantage, as it lies in the northwest of the Sultanate of Oman, serving as a connection point between Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
Al Buraimi Governorate is home to many forts and castles, including the prominent Al Khandak Fort, Al Hilla Fort, Bayt Al Nad Fort, and Al Khabib Fort, among others. It also features several tourist attractions such as the Al Sa’rnani Falaj, the sand dunes of the Al Sininah Desert, the black sands of Kahl, and the Hamasa dunes.
The governorate is witnessing the implementation of several important development and vital projects, which will serve as a major attraction, boosting both its economic and tourism sectors. Among these projects are tourist developments that will establish Al Buraimi as a dynamic and promising development and tourist destination, not only for the governorate itself but for the entire Sultanate of Oman, due to the scale and diversity of these projects.
Al Buraimi Governorate consists of three wilayats: Al Buraimi, Mahdha, and Al Sininah, with the city of Al Buraimi as its administrative center. The population of the governorate is 135,861.

Governorate Wilayates

The Wilayat of Al Buraimi

It is one of the wilayats of the Governorate of Al Buraimi, bordered by the wilayats of Mahdah, Dhank, and Suhar, as well as the city of Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. Located approximately 343 km away from Muscat, the capital, it proudly takes the Khandaq Castle as its symbol. As the centre of Al Buraimi Governorate, it is one of the largest wilayats in terms of population. The region is home to several significant historical landmarks, including forts and archaeological houses, with notable sites such as Beit Bahr, Al Fayyad Fort, Hafit Fort, and Wadi Al Jizzi Fort. In addition to its historical significance, the wilayat has about 49 falaj, and its vast sandy desert extends across the area. The Wilayat of Al Buraimi is considered a major commercial hub, where goods and merchandise flow in from neighbouring wilayats. It features a large market offering a wide variety of goods.

The Wilayat of Mahdah

Located approximately 300 km from the capital, Muscat, Mahdah is one of the wilayats of the Al Buraimi Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman. It is notable for its strategic location near the United Arab Emirates, bordering the Emirate of Al Ain. Mahdah is bordered by the Wilayat of Al Buraimi and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to the southwest, the Emirates of Dubai and Sharjah to the north, and the Wilayats of Suhar and Shinas to the east.

The Wilayat of Al-Sunainah

Al-Sunainah is one of the wilayats of the Al Buraimi Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman. It was previously known as the niyabat of Al-Sunainah. With the issuance of Royal Decree No. 108/2006, the administrative status of the niyabat was elevated to a wilayat, and it is now officially known as the Wilayat of Al-Sunainah. It is well known for its camel races, in addition to its traditional textile industries. The most prominent villages in the Wilayat of Al-Sunainah include Ain Al-Hilwah (Al-Malha), Al-Salahiya, Al-Qabil, and Hafit. Among the most notable natural features in the area are Jabal Hafeet and the sand dunes, which display a variety of natural colours ranging from light red to deep yellow. Al-Sunainah is also characterised by its numerous grazing plains, which offer fertile pasture for camels, especially after the rainy season. The wilayat is also home to several wadis that descend from Al Hajar Mountains towards the Empty Quarter, such as Wadi Al-Fateh.
