Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Art and Literature

The most prestigious periodic award celebrating innovative achievements at the local and regional level

Royal interest of thought and knowledge

Stemming from the Royal attention of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to the intellectual and knowledge achievement and in confirmation of the historic role of the Sultanate in the consolidation of cultural awareness, registration for the 6th edition of Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Art and Literature began on Sunday, July 26, 2017. This year the award will be allocated for all Arab nationals in the fields of economic studies, architectural design and literary criticism. Receiving applications for participation will close on July 26, 2017. Then, the screening and arbitration committee will choose one winner in each category to be honoured for one work. In a prestigious official ceremony by the end of December, hosted by Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science, the three winners will receive the Order of Merit and the fields of the next edition of the Award in 2018 will be announced.

How to register for The Award

Registration for the award shall be open through the Award website (www.sqa.gov.om). The specific criteria for the three fields of the 6th edition and the general terms and conditions for the ward will be publicly announced through the various media channels in the coming period.

 

The Body in charge of the Award

Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Art and Literature is a periodic award which is given in rotation; one year for Arab nationals and one year for Omani citizens. The Award is entirely organised by Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science, including announcing it, selecting the competition fields at each session, opening registration, specifying the closing date, forming the screening and arbitration committees, announcing the winners and delivering the prizes.

 

The renewal of thought and the promotion of human conscience

The Award, in general, aims to support cultural, artistic and literary fields as a way to promote human cultural progress and to contribute to the movement of scientific development and the intellectual and cognitive enrichment. It also aims at instilling authenticity and renewal values ​​ among the younger generations by providing a rich environment based on cognitive and intellectual competition. In addition, the Award aims to open the doors of competition in the areas of science and knowledge which are based on research and innovation, as well as to honour intellectuals, artists and writers for their contributions to civilization in the renovation and upgrading of human thought and conscience. As a final point, it confirms Oman’s contribution in supplying the human civilization with material, intellectual and cognitive achievements in the past, present and future.

 

The categories of the Award: highlighting cultural, human and social achievements

The Award is granted to the winners in the fields of culture, arts and literature. The field of culture is concerned with various cultural and literature works in the fields of human and social knowledge in general such as: language, history, heritage, philosophy, translation, studies of thought and so on. The field of arts covers artistic production in its various internationally known forms, such as: music, fine art, sculpture, and photography and so on. The field of literature includes various literary styles, such as: poetry, novel, short story, literary criticism, play writing and so on. A field from each category is selected at each edition of the award, so to have three winners of intellectuals, artists and writers every year; one winner in each category.

 

Endless effort and continuous success

The first edition of the Award in 2012 included the field of historical studies (Culture), the field of oil painting (Arts) and the field of short story (Literature) and it was open for Omanis only. In 2013, the Award was open for both Omanis and Arabs in the field of contemporary thought issues (Culture), the field of music (Arts) and the field of Arabic poetry (Literature). In its third edition in 2014, the Award was open only for Omanis in the field of educational studies (Culture), the field of photography (Arts), and the field of play writing (Literature). In 2015, it was open for Omanis and Arabs in the field of the Arabic language studies (Culture), the field of calligraphy (Arts) and the field of children’’s literature (Literature). The 2016 edition was only open for Omanis, in which Hamad al Ghaithi has been named winner of the translation award for his work, ‘Endless Forms of Beauty’, Bashair al Khair Band in folklore art for Al Azi and Razha Arts, and Jokha al Harthia for her novel, ‘Narinja’, issued by Dar Al-Adab for Publishing and Distribution in Beirut.

Creative achievement at the local and regional level

It is worth noting that this award is the largest one which celebrates the creative achievements at the local and regional levels. In fact, the Award reflects the attention and interest of Sultan Qaboos in thought, culture and creativity within Oman and across the Arab world. Besides, it inspires and encourages creative Omani and Arabs to continue their innovative and creative achievements.
