In 2017, the Government Communication Center was established within the Directorate-General of Communications at the Secretariat General of the Council of Ministers. On 18 August 2020, Royal Decree No. 95/2020 disbanded the Government Communication Center and transferred the Directorate-General of Communications to the Ministry of Information.
The Decree defined the new terms of reference of the Ministry of Information with regard to government communication as follows: drawing up plans to overhaul government communication; enhancing community awareness of government projects, decisions and policies; providing the media support needed by government agencies to explain their activities to the public; and overseeing and analysing the output of the media and communication services.
The Directorate-General of Communications has been drawing on the resources of social media platforms as a means of facilitating communication with the public at home and abroad. One of its aims is to enrich social media content that is directly relevant to the Sultanate, for onward sharing with different segments of society.
It also seeks to raise awareness of the services, programmes and activities that government institutions are working on. More broadly, it plans to circulate material about individual and institutional initiatives of national importance, and to promote the Sultanate and its achievements by highlighting its advanced positions in global rankings and reports.
